Diets and other ways to get rid of the irritable bowel syndrome

People have tried for a long time to find out the most appropriate method to control and eventually to get rid of the irritable bowel syndrome. Taking fiber supplements and laxatives are two of the most common IBS treatments because the main IBS symptoms are either diarrhea, or constipation. Some people may even suffer from both symptoms, alternative. Because these symptoms are similar to other gastro intestinal medical conditions, it often takes years before the right diagnosis is set. So people often try to treat themselves in various ways without knowing exactly what they have to treat. They are only treating the annoying IBS symptoms, without being aware of what had triggered the condition in the first place. Fiber supplements are recommended to both diarrhea and constipation sufferers, as the symptoms can change from one extreme to another without any kind of warning.

Doctors do not know exactly what the true causes for IBS are, but they all agree that certain aspects of the sufferer's lifestyle are to blame. Therefore, they recommend people to change their ways of life if they want to control this condition. One of the first things an IBS sufferer should address is the stress levels. Stress irritates the entire nervous system, including the nerves controlling the bowel movements, altering their normal functioning. Doing regular physical exercises and relaxation techniques are two of the most efficient ways of reducing the stress levels.

If you suffer from the irritable bowel syndrome, you must be very careful at what you eat. There are know foods that irritate the gastro intestinal tract and they should be avoided (fats, spices, alcohol or caffeine). Aliments that can produce gas and bloating should also be avoided (raw fruits, vegetables and carbonated beverages, for example).

Another thing you should know is that diarrhea leads to dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water every day to avoid this and to minimize constipation.

A food diary is also something you can try having in order to track down exactly what foods had triggered the IBS symptoms. On the other hand, you can try an exclusion diet, in which you cut down gradually certain food types from your diet to see if you notice any improvements in your symptoms.

Sometimes the symptoms are powerful enough that they cannot be controlled only through diet. If the constipation, diarrhea or the abdominal pains are very frequent and strong, you should consider a medical treatment (anti-spastic and anti-diarrheic medicines and laxatives). If stress is one of the leading factors in triggering the IBS symptoms, your doctor may also prescribe you antidepressants to lower your stress level.
